The Stratis MiroCam Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCS) system is a procedural advantage for the medical practitioners. In the times when endoscopy of small bowel was difficult, Stratis MicoCam Video Capsule Endoscopy helped doctors examine the bowel clearly. Since then, the diagnostic modality is being used for the diagnosis and evaluation of several conditions in the small intestine.
MiroCam Video Capsule Endoscopy system allows the doctors to extract the pictures of the small bowel to confirm their diagnosis. A very tiny camera is placed inside a capsule. When the patient swallows the capsule, the camera captures the images of the digestive tract as it goes down, through the stomach, and travels the entire gastrointestinal tract. The camera captures clear images of the small intestine and helps the doctors to figure out the abnormalities in the intestinal tissues. The images are transferred to a small receiver that the patient wears during the entire procedure of capsule endoscopy. After twelve hours, the images are downloaded into a computer from the receiver. The patient then passes the capsule naturally. This method is convenient and safe for the patient.
Video Capsule Endoscopy is a safe procedure and can be used in adults, as well as children above 10 years of age.
Types of diseases which can be diagnosed with the Stratis MiroCam Video Capsule Endoscopy system
This revolutionized diagnostic modality can be used in the diagnosis of many gastrointestinal diseases. Here are some of the diseases that can be diagnosed using Stratis MiroCam Video Capsule Endoscopy:
Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding
Capsule endoscopy is very potent in evaluating obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
Generally, the patients who experience unexplained iron deficiency anemia or the patients who bleed from the gastrointestinal tract are examined with colonoscopy and an EGD, i.e. upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. But, in many cases, these two diagnostic modalities fail to figure out the correct source of bleeding. This is known as “suspected small bowel bleeding” or “obscure gastrointestinal bleeding”.
The patients suspected with small bowel bleeding are advised capsule endoscopy. Around five percent of the gastrointestinal bleeding originated from the small bowel. The bleeding could be due to little vascular lesions, known as angioectasias.
There could be other reasons behind bleeding too. They are,
- Inflammation of gastrointestinal tract
- Hereditary conditions (these causes behind GI bleeding are rare)
- Ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract
- Crohn’s disease
Crohn’s disease is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. This disease causes symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, as well as fever.
Though the diagnosis based on Video Capsule Endoscopy is still a matter of question, this diagnostic modality is very helpful in evaluating the proper condition of the disease.
Small bowel Video Capsule Endoscopy can also be used in the examination of tumors in the small bowel. The small bowel is a common site for tumors, lymphoma, small intestine cancer, as well as carcinoid tumors. However, this procedure of diagnosis of tumors using capsule endoscopy is not commonly used.
Stratis MiroCam Video Capsule Endoscopy can also be used in the examination of celiac disease in the patients.
